Into the sultry air it rises, blue and still, Untouched by the wind upon the hill, While empty lightning wreathes it silently on high. Around it flutter swallows in their lowly flight, And bats dart swiftly through the gathering gloom, About the barren branch that reached its highest bloom, Lightning-scorched atop its crown, a gallows arm in sight. What do you ponder, tree, in the storm-filled hour At the edge of night? Of the reapers' talk, At noon-day rest, when the ale jug makes its walk, And the scythes lie in the grass around the flower? Or do you think upon that distant, older day When they hanged a man within your crown, How, rope about his neck, he twisted hanging down, And his tongue hung blue and broad from his mouth away? How for years he hung there, bearing winter's reign, Dancing for sport in the icy wind's embrace, And like a rust-eaten bell-clapper in its place, Struck against the pewter sky again and again.
